Jerry Franklin, the former president of the Ecological Society of America, has spent his entire life in the woods. He explains the difference between wet old growth forest of the West Side and much dryer fire adapted forests to the East. Treatment in the East can restore those forests to a frequent fire cycle again, but perhaps on the West side it is appropriate to prevent every fire we can.
